Balancing Study and Wellbeing in Exam Preparation

When we think about preparing for the SQE or any major legal assessment, it is easy to focus on the hours of revision, the number of practice questions completed, and the amount of content memorised. But true preparation goes beyond study materials. It is also about ensuring you are mentally and physically ready to perform at your best.

This is something I first realised when I was a student myself. After weeks of long days, short nights, and an endless cycle of notes and flashcards, I found myself sitting down to revise and realising I could not absorb anything. My mind was tired, my focus gone. I had reached the point where more effort was no longer leading to better results.

The most effective candidates are not always those who study the longest, but those who prepare the smartest. This means paying attention to both your knowledge and your ability to apply it calmly under pressure.

Here are some strategies to help you keep that balance in the run-up to your exams:

1. Build in recovery time

Schedule proper rest into your timetable. Adequate sleep, regular breaks, and time away from your books will help consolidate what you have learnt and protect your focus.

2. Focus on quality over quantity

Two hours of focused, distraction-free work will achieve more than five hours of distracted reading. Identify your weak areas, set clear goals, and track your progress.

3. Practise under exam conditions

Use realistic timed practice to get comfortable with the pacing and pressure of the real thing. This will make the exam environment feel more familiar and less stressful.

4. Protect your mindset

Exam preparation is as much about confidence as it is about knowledge. Surround yourself with positive influences, avoid unhelpful comparisons with others, and remind yourself of how far you have come.

Balancing study with wellbeing is not about doing less work. It is about working in a way that allows you to perform at your best when it matters most.
